a production run, not one hide after
another. It’s optimal because the nesting takes place over a larger number
of hides than previously possible. It is
dynamic because the algorithms will
adapt to the quality of incoming hides.
Manufacturers are able to obtain a
fine cut (less than .005 inch) with this
system’s precision, omni-directional
cutting. As many notches, holes and
slits as required can be programmed
onto the pattern. The real advantage,
however, is the ability to overlook kerf,
plunge lines, overcuts, tool orientation
and tool thickness when cutting.
Because all this takes place off line,
manufacturing now has a tool that is
also flexible. Production runs can be
interrupted, mixed and scheduled as
required because the system maintains
a part count.

existing technology, it chose a waterjet
The head is lightweight, which
allows Expert to build a cutting table
with speeds of up to 200 feet a minute
in contouring mode. The jet is ultra
fine and unidirectional. Cutting can
be started or stopped anywhere on the
part, permitting holes, slits and sewing
notches to be very small. Common cut
lines are now possible, and the nesting
and cutting programs need to waste no
time, motion or leather to compensate
for tool orientation or thickness.

The Force in Air
The waterjet system exerts no lateral force on the leather, which eliminates the need for foils and vacuum to
hold the part. Even organically dyed
leathers are not influenced in any
way by the waterjet because it slices
through the leather.
The bar code label communicates
the hide surface form to the overhead
laser projector system, which projects
the outline of the hide exactly as it was
scanned. The cutting surface of the
shuttle table is slightly sticky, which
will hold the leather down regardless
of its furls and tendency to curl.
Accurate parts count
Once cut, the same laser projector
will tell the operators in which bin to
place the part. The system produces
the exact number of parts needed.
The system is available in single and
dual gantry, as well as single and dual
shuttles. Because the system is modular, it can work with laser projection to
use clicker knives and rotary presses
for those shops that have smaller
throughput requirements. Customers
typically have a one-year payback on a
one-shift operation, less on operations
with two shifts.
