Biesse America and Stiles Machinery opened their North Carolina operations for an entire week in June for the first NexGen event. Visitors had the opportunity to see more than 70 machines under power at Biesse’s Charlotte, N.C., headquarters and at the Stiles operations in High Point and Gastonia.
Biesse’s orientation included a tour of its service, parts, exchange, tooling and training operations.
Biesse’s Federico Broccoli said machines that are flexible and multifunctional are selling relatively well, although overall sales are down.
He added that smaller shops making specialty products are doing better than average, although credit remains a problem.
At Stiles, visitors saw the company’s new CNC routers, solid wood equipment, widebelt sander with dry ice cleaning system and Cefla finishing equipment, which is scheduled to move to a new location in Charlotte.
Steve Waltman of Stiles said nonwood business has held up better than woodworking, but the company is seeing an increased level of quotes being requested.

Products in compliance with RoHS have restricted levels of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium (Cr6), PBB and PBDE.
The company’s zinc and white elec-trocoat finished products were already in compliance and now the black electroplate finish was reformulated to meet the directive’s requirements.
The new plating process replaces hexavalent chromium with trivalent chromium, which is a far less toxic substance. The European Union adopted the RoHS directive in 2003, and it impacts the plating process in slide manufacturing.
