Uniboard launches
new MDF/HDF plant
New MDF line will have production capacity of
226 million square feet on 3/4-inch basis.

Uniboard has invested $160 mil- lion to build a new MDF/HDF plant in Moncure, N.C. The new plant will have an annual production capacity of 226 million square feet, on a ¾-inch basis. Uniboard, a manufacturer of engineered wood products, recently held an open house at its new plant.

“Construction of our new Moncure MDF facility continues to advance on schedule,” says James Hogg, CEO of Uniboard. “Not only will it be the biggest and most cost efficient mill in North America, it will also have the most technologically advanced equipment to produce durable, high-quality and long-lasting panels.”

The new North Carolina MDF plant is designed to be flexible. It will be able to produce multiple grades, thicknesses and sizes for manufacturers of kitchen cabinetry, office and residential furniture, store fixtures, flooring and moulding.

Don Raymond, vice president of marketing, Uniboard, says that construction is scheduled to be completed in November. The new operation will create 100 new jobs. Overall, the plant will employ 260 people when it is fully running.

The Moncure plant will also supply material to Pergo, a sister company in the Raleigh area that develops, manufactures and markets laminate flooring for both residential and commercial applications. About 25 percent of MDF production will go to Pergo.

The new MDF line can make 7 x 8 or 7 x 9 sizes for Pergo in addition to standard 4 x 8 and 5 x 8 sizes. Raymond says that initial MDF production here will be CARB 1 compliant.

This will be the largest MDF mill in North America, according to Uniboard. The site features good transportation, and access to fiber. The resin plant is across the street. The plant also features special equipment, including a new cut-to-size and packaging line, new emission control equipment and a solid-fuel furnace.

is part of the existing Moncure site, which currently offers particleboard and thermofused melamine panels. The plant can make particleboard, MDF, melamine on particleboard and melamine on MDF. ●
